BRAVO: How do you relate to your character? Do you recognize yourself in Stefan?
PAUL: Sure! I also hunt my food in the woods (laughs). But Stefan and I indeed have a very similar character.
We are both introverted and brooding. And believe it or not: When we started shooting my colleague Nina really thought I was a vampire…
BRAVO: Why’s that?
PAUL: Because my canine teeth are very pronounced. Many people think that I constantly wear plastic-vampire-teeth – but they really grew like this.
And I’m very pale. But the biggest similarity between Stefan and me is that he’s also been on his own from an early age on – you’ll find out more about this in the upcoming episodes. At the age of 16 I also moved from Marlboro/ New Jersey to New York – on my own!
BRAVO: What was the reason for that?
PAUL: At that time I was cast for the soap opera “Guiding Light”. A little later I was kicked out off school because I was only concentrating on acting. But that was okay…
BRAVO: Did you have lots of friends at school?
PAUL: Rather a few. At first I went to the “Christian Brothers Academy” – a strict, catholic school for boys only. I didn’t get along with anyone.
Everything was very formal there. I hated it there. Then I went to a school for boys and girls, that was much better. I guess I have to be around girls to feel good. (laughs)
BRAVO: Your real second name is Wasilewski. Have you ever been to Poland, the homecountry of your parents?
PAUL: Sure, I also have family there. I used to spend almost all my holidays there! On my way to Poland I’ve often been to Germany, too. Especially Berlin is a great city!
BRAVO: In the movie “Wolf Lake” you’ve played a werewolf. So what’s hotter: Werewolf or vampire?
PAUL: I like vampires because they are very mysterious and thoughtful. Werewolves on the other hand act instinctly and spontaneous. It’s more fun, playing a werewolve. But a vampire is a greater challenge for an actor.
BRAVO: Would you like to be able to live forever like a vampire?
PAUL: I don’t know… (thinking). It would bother me not being able to establish relationships with “normal” people. In the course of time you see everyone around you die. I’d feel very lonely…
BRAVO: How many times have you been compared to Robert Pattinson?
PAUL: (laughs) Too many times. Mostly they talk to me about our similiar hairstyles. But I’ve had my hair like this for 10 years. I didn’t copy anything!
I don’t want to be compared to him either. Every girl would shove me out of her way to be close to him.
But in my opinion the hype about Rob enables every vampire movie and tv show – therefore “Vamprire Diaries” as well – to be successful at all!
BRAVO: How well do you get along with the other leading actors Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev?
PAUL: Perfectly! I love them!
BRAVO: Try to describe them with only one word…
PAUL: With Nina “boss” comes to my mind. (laughs) She’s a capricorn – therefore stubborn, ambitious and super-clever.
And Ian? He’s so cool! He’s a great guy, you can always and everywhere have fun with him. I couldn’t ask for better co-actors!!
